Carrington’s Dish

Because we are often gone during the day, and sometimes travel,
we got one of those self-feeding dishes for cats. It was supposed to stop
the worry over making sure
Carrington always had food to eat. Instead,
Carrington is the one who started worrying.
One morning I noticed the tube holding the food was empty and
there was only a small layer of kernels left in the tray. There was more
than enough left to keep Carrington well fed for the day. In addition,
there were kernels outside the dish that had been knocked out
on the
floor.
Carrington would be okay until I could get to the store and refill his
dish that evening.

Carrington didn't agree. He kept a vigil at the feeder. Each time I
walked by, he would run to my side and make a soft mewing sound. I'd
see him stare at the dish and then look sadly up at me. Sometimes he
would bump against my leg, others, his paw would reach out and touch,
patting my leg with his paw, claws in of course! It got to where I couldn't
go near the dish with him making sure I saw him there, looking
mournfully at the nearly empty plate.
Although there was still some food left in the dish, Carrington
worried that I didn't know the food was almost gone. He was afraid there
wouldn't be anymore. At one point, he nudged the dish aside with his
paw and started eating the kernels on the floor. Instead of eating the
fresh food that was clean and in his dish, he ate the crumbs and dirty
morsels that had been tossed aside. His faith in us to provide more was
wavering.
All the time Carrington worried about whether he would have
anymore food or not, I knew he would have more food. Further, I knew
he would not run out
, nor would I allow any harm come to him. I had
plans to get more for him that day, and I knew his dish would be full
again.
And while I had other things to do and it would be a bit before his
dish would be refilled according to my time, Carrington wanted it to be
filled on his time table.

It hit me, God does the same for us. We may see that our dishes
are almost empty. We fear what will happen if nothing else is put in
there. We may even believe that He won't put something more in there.
But why do we act that way? God knows He has plans to prosper us, not
to harm us. He has promised His love to us and that He will be there to
take care of our needs. If He knows every bird that falls from the sky, He
knows even more about us. God knows what we need and He provides
for our needs, in His time, not ours. His time is the right time, although
our limited brains do not always see this and we worry.
God only wants us to trust and know He is there.  How much more
joyous would life be if we really believed this and acted on it? How much
less stress would we have? Wouldn’t it be nice to go through each day
with no care as to what we eat or how we will live? God has said He will
take care of us, it is up to us to act as if we believe it.
As time has passed, Carrington is noticeably more relaxed about
his dish. He doesn't come running every time it gets low on food.
By
spending time with us, h
e's learned that we always take care of him.
